The hydro guys working down there arent an issue, they all enjoyed watching us run horseshoe and even shot some pics. Finally figured out horseshoe which is a relief. Nice line down the right. Manky drop is definetly pushy and as we were only two we portaged on river left. Lets just say it involves ropes but its pretty quick work. The leap of faith is still good but the seal launch just keeps getting gnarlier. Good lines and good times. The upper lower was at .1 or .2 ish on the guage and its pretty bumpy but still ok... It`s raining pretty hard down here so who knows it might come up a bit. The hydro project at horseshoe falls was to change out part of the diversion pipe and do repairs inside it. The crew there now is a clean-up crew and they dont have a problem with kayakers. So dont bother running the spillway because its lame and bumpy! They said they should be done by the end of the week. Were going to hit it up again this week sometime for anyone interested!

About .4 on the powerhouse guage which made the upper lower less bumpy and corner pocket smooth again. The hydro guys are still there and they still like watching us huck. It was raining again today.

It was flowing at .5 on the powerhouse guage which made the whole run really fun. We ran the drop on the left onto the first slide of the upper upper and it was smooth and soft. Leap of faith is nice at this level with a nice cushy landing. Rob ran the river right line today and it looked pretty sweet! The upper lower was fun and fast. The take out still blows! Amazing to be running good water this late ,every time I've gone out i've expected it to have dropped but it just gets better.

| Grade 4 Posts: 143 ![]() ![]() | There are currently heavy rainfall warnings for the elk valley forcasted for tonight and tomorrow! The elk has been very reactive to rain this last month so this could really get things pumping again! We had a great run down the elk last sunday with a nice medium level for the upper lower and a brown milky river. This weekend should be similar! | ||

| Grade 4 Posts: 143 ![]() ![]() | The upper upper is most likely done for the season as they are now diverting most of the flow through the diversion pipe! The upper lower still looks ok probably .5 ish on the powerhouse guage. There was alot of water accumulated yesterday but with the diversion going again its just not worth the drive! Look out kananaskis here I come!! | ||

If it looks like it is holding on Thursday let me know and I'll bring my boat for Friday. My guess is it will drop back down as it looks cold and dry for the next few days. Hopefully I am wrong.

| Grade 4 Posts: 143 ![]() ![]() | Thats what I figure too but I am hoping it stays runnable. Last friday there was hardly any water coming over the falls but the upper lower looked similar to the photo i posted. Driving through fernie on monday the creek by the ski hill was chugging and completly brown and the elk was visibly much higher. I will post thursday if it is still good or not. | ||

| Grade 5 Posts: 240 ![]() ![]() ![]() | Paddled the Upper Elk this weekend, the water level was a tad on the high side. 1.7 or 1.6 on the Environment Canada Gauge Elk below Elko dam. A bunch of first timers, the crux of the run is definitely what we are now calling cave man, Stuarts guide book has a couple of names but I can't figure out which rapids they are. Anyways Cave mans is the triple drop with a boulder fence into a chute and the last one is a diagonal ledge pushing into the cave and the Garbage Smasher. Of all the runs down this rapid that I am aware of more than 50 % of the paddlers have ended up in either the Cave, the Garbage Smasher (the pocket below the cave) or up against the head wall. If you take away my three clean runs it is closer to 80% of the people have issues. 4/6 on Saturday. The portage on this is very difficult and requires ropes a harness and some climbing skils. Or you can throw your boat and jump after it, but you need someone willing to run the rapid with no safety so they can catch you. THe jump is about thirty feet and requires you to jump over the river right above the Garbage Smasher, and one person glanced some rocks. This is full on class 5/5+ be sure you can handle it before dropping in. | ||
